From proofreading to improving flow and style, from formatting to reorganizing your manuscript, we work with you every step of the way. Let our experienced editors and writers help you perfect many types of writing:

Theses and dissertations

Finalizing your manuscript for a Master's Thesis or Dissertation can become a daunting task. In our experience, degree candidates place priority on refining the research content and often get to thorough editing with very little time left before the deadline.

We offer content editing with intensive reorganization help if needed, as well as formatting to specific institutional requirements (text, table of contents, references). Contact us for a free manuscript evaluation and an estimate of the editing time and cost.

Academic papers, from high school to professional

Peer-reviewed journal articles: from proofreading to heavy copy editing for better flow and clearer "story line”; reduction to fit within word limitations; help with creating concise and engaging abstracts; professional illustrations from your hand-drawn sketches; conference poster design.

School and college papers and reports: content editing of complete drafts; advice on composition, style, and development of writing assignments; tutoring in academic and creative writing.

Creative writing (fiction, non-fiction)

Whether a book-length manuscript or a short story, we offer copy editing and proofreading for grammar and style. We also provide guidance through the stages of story development, writing, and editing.

Resumes and cover letters

The first contact you make with a potential employer is crucial. We can redesign your resume so that it looks and sounds polished and professional, increasing the likelihood that an employer will consider you as an attractive candidate.

A strong cover letter that highlights your attributes and illustrates your experience is just as important as a strong resume. We can write personalized, specific letters that discuss how your experience directly matches each employer’s needs.

Application or scholarship letters and essays

All of our editors and writers have acquired advanced degrees and won awards and know what it takes to craft a stellar application letter or essay. We can assist you in writing a letter that quickly engages your reader, a letter that is unique, a letter that makes you a memorable candidate.

Presentations and speeches

We can assist you in creating a presentation that is tailored to your audience, whether you are putting together a PowerPoint presentation or creating figures, tables, and charts for a poster display.

Also available is personalized coaching for public speaking. Antoinette, our principal editor, grew up with a stutter and used this challenge to her advantage. As a poet, she excels in public speaking and enjoys helping others face their fears and thrive in this sometimes daunting arena.

Frequently asked questions

Proofreading/copy editing/content editing — Which one do I need?

Proofreading is the lightest type of editing. It corrects the cosmetic errors when the manuscript is otherwise finished. It is not comprehensive and does not involve rewriting text or adjusting the general flow of content. Proofreading is the equivalent of running a fine tooth comb through your text to catch small problems and typographical errors.

Copy editing focuses on improving style, formatting, and accuracy. It removes inconsistencies and ensures that the manuscript is not only grammatically correct, but also flows with ease. Copy editing can range from light to heavy: the former may include checking accuracy and taking care of most grammatical issues; the latter may require re-structuring of the text or significantly correcting style, flow, and grammar.

Content editing is where the revision work is much more involved and may require adding parts that were omitted or even re-writing sections of the manuscript. This level of editing is not only about making corrections, but also about creating new content.

What is included in your free initial consultation?

The first consultation can be arranged with one of our editors to be conducted in person, over the phone, or through email. We will talk about your writing assignment, figure out how much help you will need, and discuss a time line for the completion of your project. Then, we will figure out the most efficient and convenient schedule and communication format (in person or remote) to meet your needs.

Do I have to pay in advance? Is there a refund policy?

After we have conducted the initial free consultation and estimated the time and cost of editing, you should be able to make an informed decision whether our service is what you were looking for. If you decide to proceed, we will send you a PayPal invoice and commence working on your project once the payment is received.

Small projects such as letters of reference or resumes require prepayment in full; medium-size projects such as term papers may be prepaid in installments. For large projects such as dissertations, we like to offer a 50% refund on the initial four-hour payment in the event that, after reviewing the first four hours worth of editing, the client decides that our service is not suitable.

How can I reduce the cost of having my manuscript edited?

Many of our clients are students, so we do our best to keep the rates low. Yet, we keep our quality high and schedule flexible, which makes Durham Editors a fair deal, if not a bargain. If you would like to further reduce the cost of editing, you could do so by performing the most time-consuming levels of editing on your own. In addition, you can make sure that the project is not given to us at the last minute.

For example, if you hire an editor to do heavy copy editing or even content editing on your PhD dissertation, the cost for editing a 100-page draft with a short turnaround time can be as high as $1,000, depending on the amount of work needed. On the other hand, if you resolve the major issues in the text and need some light copy editing and proofreading, the cost may be reduced tenfold.

Can you ensure that my manuscript will be accepted for publication?

It is our responsibility to correct and improve the use of English in your technical, scientific, or medical writing project. Yet, we would not be able to guarantee success in the publication of your manuscript even after our edits.

The acceptance decision by a journal editor is based on the outcome of the peer review that evaluates academic merit of the research presented. While good use of language, proper academic writing style, and suitable formatting are necessary for acceptance and will be ensured by our efforts, we are unable to make any judgment regarding the quality of your manuscript's content and the likelihood of its acceptance for publication.
